Being a Light in the Darkness

In a world that often feels shrouded in darkness, both literally and metaphorically, the Being a Light in the Darkness Program, using PVS-14s stands out as unique and spiritually enlightening experience. As a guide for a group of four young men, I had the privilege of witnessing the power of faith and fellowship in the use of night vision devices.

We started the night with two of the most exhilarating activities, a ground level obstacle course and low angle descent rappelling under the cover of darkness. The challenge of walking for first time users under night vision can be difficult to say the least. I took a moment to teach them how to safely move under NVGs through the woods to avoid any injuries for the night (Success!). Next was the low angle descent rappel and man was that invigorating. The physical challenge of descending into the unknown echoed the journey of faith, where we step into the unknown with trust and reliance on God’s guidance. The experience fostered a sense of courage and camaraderie among the young men, strengthening our bonds as we faced challenges together.

Next on the itinerary was to immerse participants in nocturnal adventures that blended fun, education, and worship. Our nights were filled with activities such as a thrilling night hike, where the only sources of light were our PSV-14s, the stars, and the moon above. The darkness heightened our senses and fostered an atmosphere of unity and dependence on one another.

As the night hike started, we played Nocturnal Animal Bingo: Laughter echoed through the night as we engaged in a unique game hunting for a glimpse of different nocturnal creatures. This lighthearted activity allowed us to appreciate the diverse and mysterious creatures that thrive in the darkness. The parallels to our own lives were evident – just as these animals adapt and thrive in the night, we too can find strength and purpose in the challenges we face.

Star gazing became a profound moment for reflection as we marveled at the vastness of the universe. Under the normal eye you can look at the starts and see 10 or 12 stars in one location but if you look through night vision in the same spot almost magically, you’ll see another 10 or 20 appear. The glittering stars served as reminders of God’s grand design. The infinite possibilities that exist with Him we may not see but when we let His light shine in the darkest moments of life, we will see His hands are there.

Our physical sustenance during this event was as unique as our activities. Meals Ready-to-Eat (MREs) provided an almost “behind enemy lines” feeling for the young men. With the thought of you could be the only person with the courage to share the Gospel in places it’s not welcome. It further accentuated the thought of warring for people to know Christ in a spiritual war.

Throughout the program, we delved into discussions on why it’s crucial to share the gospel in various aspects of life, be it at work, school, or home. The metaphor of the night vision device served as a powerful illustration – just as these devices amplify light in the darkness, our actions and words can serve as beacons of hope and faith in the darkest corners of the world.

As the night gave way to dawn, our crew gathered for a powerful sunrise worship service. The symbolism of the rising sun resonated with the message of hope and renewal found in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The experience served as a reminder that, just as the sun dispels darkness, our faith can illuminate the lives of those around us leading people to Christ.

The Being a Light in the Darkness Program was an amazing journey that blended science, spirituality, and fellowship. As the guide, I witnessed firsthand the impact of combining nocturnal adventures with a focus on sharing the gospel. It reinforced the idea that each one of us can be a light in the darkness, illuminating the path for others and spreading the message of hope and faith.

God Bless,
